Í þessum spurningum felst kjarni andlegs lífs ...

 

Auðvitað getur það gerst að við gleymum okkar leyndustu fyrirætlunum þegar við erum undir miklu álagi í amstri lífsins. En þegar kemur að leiðarlokum og fólk lítur yfir farinn veg eru spurningarnar sem það spyr yfirleitt ekki „hvað sé mikið inni á bankabókinni“ eða „hvað það hafi skrifað margar bækur“ eða „byggt mörg hús“. Ef þú hefur notið þeirra forréttinda að vera hjá fólki sem veit að það er að deyja þá veistu að spurningar þess eru mjög einfaldar: „Gaf ég raunverulega ást?“ „Lifði ég lífinu lifandi?“ „Lærðist mér að gefa eftir?“

Í þessum spurningum felst kjarni andlegs lífs.

For EnlightenNext magazine's classic “Ego Issue,” one of our editors traveled to a remote Greek Orthodox hermitage to speak with Archimandrite Dionysios, a revered elder from that ancient tradition, about why the narcissistic ego has always been considered the great nemesis of spiritual life.
      

Q:   Why is the ego considered to be such a formidable adversary on the path?

A:   It is the enemy because it is against love. When I look at myself, I don't love others. When I want to occupy for myself what is yours, I become the killer of my brother, like Cain killed Abel. When I want to satisfy myself, this satisfaction is gained through sacrificing the freedom of the other. Then my ego becomes my lord, my god, and there is no stronger temptation than this. Because to us, this ego may seem like a diamond. It has a shine like gold. But whatever is shining is not gold. The ego is just like a fire without light, a fire without warmth, a fire without life. It seems that it has many sides and many possibilities—but what is this possibility? What is ego? Only the means by which I protect myself as if I were in a battle, as if every other person is my enemy, and the only thing I care about is winning the victory.

"And so, please practice! Please let that be your guide. And I believe that you will find, if your practice matures, that Spirit will reach down and bless your every word and deed, and you will be taken quite beyond yourself, and the Divine will blaze with the light of a thousand suns, and glories upon glories will be given unto you, and you will in every way be home. Is Zen a religion? It is not a religion in the sense that the term is popularly understood; for Zen has no God to worship, no ceremonial rites to observe, no future abode to which the dead are destined, and, last of all, Zen has no soul whose welfare is to be looked after by somebody else and whose immortality is a matter of intense concern with some people. Zen is free from all these dogmatic and "religious" encumbrances. ...

 

As to all those images of various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and Devas and other beings that one comes across in Zen temples, they are like so many pieces of wood or stone or metal; they are like camellias, azaleas, or stone lanterns in my garden. Make obeisance to the camellia now in full bloom, and worship it if you like, Zen would say. There is as much religion in so doing as in bowing to the various Buddhist gods, or as sprinkling holy water, or as participating in the Lord's Supper. All those pious deeds considered to be meritorious or sanctifying by most so-called religiously minded people are artificialities in the eyes of Zen. It boldly declares that "the immaculate Yogins do not enter Nirvana and the precept-violating monks do not go to hell". This, to ordinary minds, is a contradiction of the common law of moral life, but herein lies the truth and the life of Zen. Zen is the spirit of a man. Zen believes in its inner purity and goodness. Whatever is superadded or violently torn away, injures the wholesomeness of the spirit. Zen, therefore, is emphatically against all religious conventionalism. ...

An attitude of feeling safe and at peace as long as one is sitting is no good at all. All sentient beings are crying out in one form or another, they're suffering and in distress. Í vetur verður áfram starfræktur þögull hugleiðsluhópur sem byggir á DVD myndefni með andlega kennaranum Eckhart Tolle (sjá http://www.eckharttolle.com/groups). Hópurinn kemur saman annað hvert sunnudagskvöld í vetur  kl. 20 á annarri hæð í húsi Guðspekifélagsins að Ingólfsstræti 22.  Húsið opnar kl. 19:30 og lokar kl. 20 og eru allir beðnir um að hafa hljótt um sig við komu og brottför. Byrjað er á þögulli hugleiðslu í uþb. 10 mínútur, síðan er horft á myndefni með Eckhart  Tolle í 90 mínútur og að lokum er þögul hugleiðsla í uþb. 10 mínútur. Í vetur verður byrjað á að sýna frá umfjöllun Eckhart Tolle og Opruh Winfrey á bókinni A NEW EARTH Awakening to Your Life´s Purpose  eftir Eckhart Tolle.
