Festival of lights

God bless you all during the celebration of Deepavali, the Festival of Lights.

Many historical and mythological stories surround the Festival of Lights celebration. One story relates the festival to Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom, Ayodhya, after fourteen years of exile, as well as to his rescue of Mother Sita from Ravana. The people of Ayodhya were overjoyed and decorated their houses with flowers, leaves, and other articles while at the same time decorating with lamps and lights that looked beautiful at night.

What is its significance now? Our city of life should be Ayodhya, which means the battle has ended. Freedom from all conflict is possible only when we are completely in a God-conscious state. We should invite Lord Rama to enter the city — in other words, when we are at peace, without war or other disturbances, divinity manifests. We should decorate the body with light. Physically it is not possible, but inwardly it can be done. Let the light of knowledge emerge from every door of the body temple. Then we will not be tempted and troubled. In addition, with our eyes open, we should perceive the light of God everywhere. In deep meditation with eyes closed, we should experience the inner light. Then it will be a beautiful celebration of the Festival of Lights. I will be in the state of Self-knowledge and I will help others to develop knowledge and understanding.

God has given each of us a beautiful opportunity to lead a divine life. Let us make the best use of it.

I am praying for all of you and sending my light and love to you all.

Happy Deepavali.

With Love,
Prajnanananda
