Hvað gerist í þér ef þú hefur ekkert að gera, enginn ætlast til neins af þér og þú þarft engar áhyggjur að hafa af framfæri þínu?

 

Geturðu unað við að vera þannig að gera ekkert, hafir enga sérstaka dægrastyttingu, talir svo að segja ekkert við fólk og alls ekki til að stytta þér stundir, sjáir kannski ekki einn einasta mann?

 

Sérðu þér fært að una við það eitt sem er eðlilegt hverjum manni og nauðsynlegt: svosem að draga andann, horfa á náttúrlegt umhverfi, ganga úti við, sitja eða rölta um og virða fyrir þér flæði hugsananna og neyta nauða fábreytts matar og drykkjar?

 

Hver þolir slíkt frelsi, frelsi sem býður ekki uppá neina valkosti — því ekkert er eftir nema það eitt að vera maður? En til þess að geta notað löng frí til hlítar til andlegra iðkana, eða það sem eftir er ævinnar ef þú ert kominn á ellilaun, verðurðu að þola þessa tegund af frelsi.

Kl. 14:30 mun hann svo kynna fræðsluefni úr safni Sigvalda Hjálmarssonar til kl. 15:00. Þá mun taka við hefðbundin dagskrá uppi í bókasafni eins og áður. Unnt er að sleppa hugleiðingunni kl. 14:00 ef fólk vill og mæta kl. 14:30. Why Do You Call it Yoga AND Meditation? -Strange usage of the word yoga-

 

One side effect of the popularity of yoga postures is a strange usage of the word yoga. In many peoples minds the word yoga only refers to the physical exercises and stretches, and people talk about "doing" yoga, like it is a thing that can be done. But the exercises are only a small part of the whole yoga system. Originally yoga refers to a system of Self-knowledge. The main purpose of yoga is Self-exploration through various philosophical and meditative practices. The exercises were originally put in the system in order to produce a steady seated posture, the health benefits of yoga postures were only discovered later.

 

When yoga is thought of as a holistic practice, mainly based on philosophy and meditation, it sounds very strange when people talk about "doing yoga AND meditation." Isn't yoga more meditation than stretching?


This use of the word yoga is not likely to change any time soon, and it may even become more body-centric before it returns it to it's roots again, but I would like to encourage people to use the word in a more encompassing manner, and if they want to distinguish between stretching and meditation, why not say: "I am going to practice some stretching and yoga."

Því miður kemur Sjálfsævisaga yoga ekki út fyrir jól

 

„Froskurinn er líka heima hjá sér í vatninu“, sagði Abu Said með góðlátlegri fyrirlitningu. „Hrafninn og gammurinn eiga létt með að fljúga í loftinu, og djöfullinn getur verið samtímis í austri og vestri. Sannur maður er sá, er dvelur með ráðvendni meðal samborgara sínna, sá, sem kaupir og selur, en gleymir þó ekki Guði eitt augnablik“.Öðru sinni lét þessi mikli persneski lærifaðir trúarskoðanir sínar í ljós þannig að  hann taldi nauðsynlegt: „Að  leggja til hliðar það, sem þú hefur í höfðinu (þ. e.: eigingjarnar langanir og metorðagirnd), gefa af ljúfum vilja það sem þú hefur handa á milli og láta aldrei bugast fyrir andstreymi“.

En hvorki þessi réttsýni vitringur, sem ég hitti í Kalighatmusterinu, né yoginn sem þjálfaður var í Tíbet, fullnægði þeirri þrá sem mér bjó í brjósti eftir meistara. Hjarta mitt þurfti engr­ar leiðsagnar við til að kannast við hann, heldur svarað í kalli hans viðstöðulaust með fögnuði og það því fremur sem sú þögn er umlukti huga minn var sjaldnar rofin. Þegar ég hitti hann að lokum kenndi hann mér með dýrlegu fordæmi sínu aðal hins sanna manns.

Því miður mun Sjálfsævisaga yoga ekki koma út fyrir jól. Það var mun meiri vinna í kringum bókina en við héldum þannig að útgáfan treysti sér ekki til að ná þessu fyrir jól. Stefnt er á að koma henni út í janúar.

 


Meditation in schools

 

Meditation could help put an end to bullying in schools.

Researchers at the Center for the Investigation of Healthy Minds in Madison is testing that theory, with some high-powered backing: The Dalai Lama himself.

Here’s the theory: If kids know how to relax and focus their minds, they won’t lash out or react with anger.

Jamie Shields started meditating before and after school a few years ago, and said it has helped her performance in high school.

“Wake up in the morning and go home at night and just meditate and you just forget about everything and stress just rolls off and i’m able to focus more what i’m working on – homework, studying in school. I can stay more alert throughout the day,” Shields told us.

The researchers in Madison want to bring that focus to a younger group. They believe kids entering middle school would benefit most, as that is a tumultuous age. Puberty hits, there’s more school pressure, and middle school can be especially tough for kids who feel “different.”

It is with the deepest respect and love for our beloved president and sanghamata that we share with you the news that Sri Daya Mata passed away peacefully on November 30, 2010. To the countless thousands of members and friends who were profoundly touched by her presence, she was the embodiment of our Guru's teachings and life work, and her unconditional love will most certainly continue to bless the lives of each one of his worldwide spiritual family.

Dear Ones,
 
Late last evening, our beloved Sri Daya Mataji, president and sanghamata of Self-Realization Fellowship/Yogoda Satsanga Society of India, peacefully left her mortal form. Her life, so radiant with the light and love of God, has joined the vast ocean of His omnipresent love. How grateful we are that Divine Mother allowed her to stay for so many years to bless this world with her motherly love and compassion, which have touched the lives of us all. Our hearts long to have her with us still. Yet we would not mar with grief the heavenly joy of the divine welcome she has received in the realm beyond this world, or begrudge her the bliss beyond imagining that her soul knows now for having so nobly, courageously, and perfectly fulfilled the vast spiritual responsibilities Gurudeva placed on her shoulders.
 
From the very beginning when she came to the ashram as a shy young girl of seventeen, Guruji saw in her a disciple in whom he could place his utmost trust − a true devotee who yearned for God above all else, who would be the "nest egg" of his work, and mother to countless souls on the spiritual path. Through her heart's receptivity, he guided the unfolding of her life, infusing in her the spiritual strength that enabled her to face every challenge the years would bring with utter faith in God, and with the sole desire to do her Guru's will. Through the years, she laid a firm foundation for his work in both East and West and guided it from her complete attunement with his intent and spirit. She faithfully recorded his words of wisdom and steadfastly upheld the purity of his sacred teachings for all the generations of devotees to come.
 
Our beloved Daya Mataji stirred our hearts with yearning for the Divine, as Gurudeva stirred hers, by living to the fullest his words: "Be so drunk with the love of God that you will know nothing but God; and give that love to all." Immersed in that joyous consciousness, she felt for all of God's children. Souls from around the world poured out to her their deepest feelings and cares, and with the tender love of Divine Mother she held them in her thoughts and prayers. Through her outreaching heart many experienced, perhaps for the first time, what it meant to be loved unconditionally. She wanted only to serve, and her thought was never of self, but "How can I help that soul?"
 
The essence of her being was love itself and our souls deeply responded. In reverent thankfulness for the blessed gift of her life we bow to God and Guru. And we invite you to join us in prayer as we inwardly strew her soul's path with flowers of gratitude for all that she has given to each one of us, to our blessed Guru's work, and to this world. Let us honor our beloved Ma by going forward with courage and with the divine enthusiasm she instilled in us, laying at her feet the greatest tribute − our resolve to follow her example by living divinely, loving God selflessly, and loving one another as part of Him. With invisible bonds of purest love, we will keep her close in our hearts until one day we meet again in His boundless joy.
